Workplace Unplugged

Invitation to Join Behavioural Science Study

Written by Mark Tilley | September 23, 2025

Do you often find yourself distracted at work? Perhaps gazing into the distance, your mind wandering; thinking about what to have for dinner, your weekend plans, or focusing on an unexpected noise, smell or colour in your surroundings?

Clare Bridger, from Incendium Consulting and one of our 2024 Workplace Leaders Top 50 is completing an Executive Masters in Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics. She is running a behavioural experiment to find smarter, science-backed ways to reduce workplace distractibility and integrate this into future workplace platforms. It will take place during the week commencing 6th October and she is looking for 200 more participants to join her.

You will be required from 9.30am-10.15am on Monday 6th October and again at 9.30am-9.45am on Friday 10th October. During the week, you will be given some professional strategies to test out and implement around your usual working day.

Who can Participate?

Full-time UK-based* employees aged 25 - 55 (as of 6th October 2025).

Sign up HERE by 5pm, Wednesday 1st October.

What is the experiment about?

White-collar productivity losses from workplace distractions have been found to cost the economy billions annually. Research suggests that these distractions can stem from a wide range of sensory stimuli, including changes in sounds, smells, visuals and materials used. Despite this evidence, most existing research is focused on one-size-fits-all interventions, overlooking individual differences in how people process environmental inputs and the impact on their distraction levels.

If we gain scientific evidence about the best solutions, these could be productised and integrated into workplace platforms to help people choose better spaces to work.

This study will test different strategies to help people stay focused at work. Participants will be randomly assigned to a test group and will try out various techniques designed to improve concentration.
